Saturday, October 22, 2022 –Immigration Director-General Alexander Muteshi has confirmed a crisis in passports in the country.
In his latest updated, he said that the government has the 66-page passport only, attributing this to lack of enough papers.
As of now, he revealed only category C of 66 pages can be found and this is costing Kenyans sh 7,550 to get one.
When all the booklets were available, a 32-page document would cost sh 4,550 while the 50-page one cost sh 6,050 which got depleted two weeks ago.
Muteshi claimed that the company that has been supplying the 32 and 50-page passports booklets had not done so leading to the crisis.
“We have had problems getting the 32 and 50-page booklets to print the passport but have been following up with relevant authorities to have the matter resolved as soon as possible,” Muteshi explained.
He, however, stated that the lack of the two categories of passports will not extend the November deadline set to make sure each person has a new version of the biometric document.
Currently, Kenyans are forced to dig deeper into their pockets to get the 66-page passport which is being sold at sh 7,550.
