Thursday, November 3, 2022 –Newly-appointed Transport and Roads Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has hinted at removing police officers from roads.
Appearing on Citizen TV show on Wednesday November 2 night, the new CS accused traffic police of collusion to increase insanity on highways and, therefore, promised to digitize the road transport system so that, cameras can do the monitoring.
Once the new programme is rolled out, motorists who flout traffic rules will be singled out by hawk-eyed cameras mounted all over the roads, and charged instantly through SMS notifications.
“We will move to instant fines immediately to ensure that if you are found committing a traffic offense such as overlapping, we will be able to identify you using the current smart number plates and make sure that you get an SMS directly to your phone telling you that you were found breaking rules and the fine. The cameras will have recorded,” he noted.
Those who continuously flout the safety rules and regulations may eventually see their driving permits revoked permanently.
To make this a huge success, the new CS added that he is setting up command centers through which police will be able to monitor what is happening on all roads.
“We will have e-police officers that will be at the command centre monitoring what is happening and making sure that the information is recorded for evidence if need be,” stated Murkomen.
According to Mr. Murkomen, the new road technology will keep all roads safe as notorious highway offenders will be monitored accurately and in real time.
And speaking about motor vehicle inspection centers, the new transport CS announced that his office was working to see more set-light offices set up across the country.
