Tuesday, November 1, 2022 –New Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has hinted at banning Mutumba imports into the country.
Addressing at Changamka Shopping Festival, the newly appointed CS, and a former lawmaker said the new government’s focus will be on empowering the local textile industry.
“The price we are selling clothes to America is much lower than Mitumba so it is not a question of price it is a question of availability,” Kuria said.
Kuria further said time to ban Mitumba trade in the country is near so as to strengthen the local manufacturing sector.
“I will work with the textile industry to ensure that we make cheaper clothes available in this market, and then we will ban Mitumba when we give people an alternative,” he stated.
His view, to many, has come as a surprise since he is among the leaders allied to the William Ruto’s colaition who attacked Raila for proposing this in the run up to the August election.

On her part, Florence Lala cautioned that a such move would turn detrimental to many families depending the second hand cloth business in the country.
