Friday, May 26, 2023 –Twenty students are reported to have collapsed following an attack by police who lobbed teargas canisters inside their school in Kawangware Nairobi.
In a video shared by Citizen Tv on Friday May 26, residents can be seen ferrying little boys and girl into a standby ambulance.
The incident which took place in Kawamgware on Friday noon left many Kenyans wondering about the safety of learners amid clashes between police and members of the public.
Homenews.co.ke reported that the victim students were taking their morning lessons when police officers engaged Kawangware traders in hours of running battles.
And when the police started releasing teargas to disperse the traders, some canisters landed in the nearby school, causing pandemonium.
In the process, around 20 learners were caught between a’ rock and hard surface’ as they were overwhelmed by the suffocating gases.
The affected students would then later be rushed to various hospitals around Kawangware Estate, where they received under treatment.
According to Koshu Kunii, tear gas is the generic term for a class of compounds that cause a burning sensation. Most law enforcement agencies around the world, use a chemical called CS, short for 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile.
This CS activates a specific pain receptor in human body and could block breathing leading to collapsing of targets or even death if not controlled early.
