Monday, December 5, 2022 –Embattled Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC Vice Chair Juliana Cherera has finally resigned.
She made the announcement on Monday December 5 morning saying she could not continue executing her official mandate in such a poisoned environment.
“However, my cumulative actions done in good faith are unfortunately misjudged and misinterpreted. After careful consideration of the current events at the commission and with consultation with my family and lawyers, I accept that my stay at the commission is no longer tenable and therefore choose to vacate.
“I sincerely thank His Excellency Hon. Dr. William Samoei Arap Ruto, The President of the Republic of Kenya for the opportunity accorded to me to serve the republic. God Bless,” she announced.
She defended her service to the country saying, unfortunately, a section of politicians misjudged her hence being labeled as a rebel within the IEBC.
“Since joining the commission, I have dispensed my duties diligently, meticulously and put a spirited effort in helping the commission deal with corporate governance issues under very difficult circumstances. As vice chairperson, I always advocated for fair treatment and equal opportunity for all staff,” she added.
Cherera’s resignation comes as President William Ruto had suspended the four IEBC commissioners – Cherera, Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit and Justus Nyang’aya who was first to resign.
Despite Raila’s protest, the President maintained that this will pave way for thorough investigations into their conduct in the August 9 election.
