Monday, November 14, 2022 –Apart from cattle rustling and banditry in pastoral areas, urban centers are facing their fair share of insecurity with mugging gangs stabbing and robbing residents at will every day.
In just one week, there has been an alarming rate of mugging, stabbing, killing and robbing of innocent pedestrians around Nairobi City.
It doesn’t matter which time you are in town, anytime there could be reported robbery starting with Globe Cinema Round About extending into foot bridges and flyovers in many parts of urban centers.
The criminals, mostly who are youth that think the word ‘hustler’ means robbing and killing, are using clubs, sharpened knives and pistols to carry out their duties as police drag on to take action.
Victims have been injured, and their valuables including phones, tablets, laptops and watches stolen in complete broad day light.
The growing state of lawlessness has been a worrying state in the country; what recently triggered a stern statement from opposition chief, Raila Odinga.
“Lawlessness and impunity seem to be finding their way back into our national life, targeting not just individuals but also property in a manner witnessed in a previous era that Kenyans had hoped were gone forever.
“This is the easiest way to lose a country to criminals,” Raila said,
And yesterday, President William Ruto also delivered a warning statement over the state of insecurity in the country.
“Muggings, cattle rustling or other forms of insecurity must stop,” the President said, adding that the National Police Service NPS is independent and properly resourced to execute its mandate.
He was speaking this after reports emerged that a 24-year old Keagan Githua was stabbed in the chest in Rideways on October 30.
Several other Kenyans have lost lives some fighting for their lives in hospitals across the country.
A quick cross-check in Kakamega Town, indicated that residents of Malemba and the neighboring Shirere estates are facing a similar challenge.
Businesses have to be closed before 9 PM every day and everyone must be at home by that time.
