Saturday, December 10, 2022 –Chief Justice Martha Koome fumbled when asked to explain a point on President William Ruto.
In the interview aired live on the mainstream media and hosted by American journalist, Steve Clemons, Koome was put to task to explain what would have happened could Ruto have lost the August 9 elections.
“If the numbers were reversed and suppose Ruto received 48 per cent and Odinga 51 per cent, do you believe that the belief in the institution and the strength of the court would have been respected in that category as well?” he asked Koome.
This saw the CJ openly fumble with answering the hard-to tackle question before she described it (question) as hypothetical.
“The problem with judges is that we do not answer hypothetical questions, we deal with real problems,” she responded.
It saw the US-based journalist continue to push for answers from the Kenyan CJ who is currently in the US for a working tour.
“You were a little political when you were younger and advocated for reforms,” Clemons went on.
Judge Koome would then answer that, as a long-serving judge with experience, she believes in evidence when making her judgements.
“20 years I go I became a judge. I just deal with evidence and I pronounce myself according to evidence and I am very reluctant to deal with hypothetical questions,” she maintained.
She went on to defend the Judiciary which she said must be independent so that to render independent rulings.
