Tuesday, January 31, 2023 –Former electoral body Chairman Wafula Chebukati has issued an ultimatum to Azimio leader Raila Odinga over video claims.
The former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC boss, while reacting on the claims made by Odinga during the recent Azimio la Umoja rallies, wants Raila to set the record straight by producing the purported CCTV footage showing three IEBC commissioners at his home a day before elections results were announced.
Chebukati’s Demand Notice addressed to Mr. Odinga requires him(the former premier) to produce the purported CCTV footage capturing the chairman and the two commissioners at his Karen residence.
Chebukati wants this video and photos in a record seven days; failure to which he will take further action against the opposition leader.
Chebukati’s lawyers Saroni and Stevens Advocates confirmed that the said demand letter had already been served to the defendant.
“Further, our Client is aggrieved that you took no caution or responsibility while making the adverse remarks with the consequence that our Client has suffered and continues to suffer serious reputational injury, taking into account his status and position as former Chairman of IEBC,” the statement read partly.
During the Sunday January 29 Jacaranda rally, a daring and charged up Odinga claimed that Chebukati and ex-commissioners Boya Molu, and Abdi Guliye visited his residence seeking to be bribed millions so that to tilt election results in his favour.
Odinga further used the opportunity to fire a warning shot at President Ruto’s ‘illegitimate’ regime which he said he does not recognize.
