Chances of joining University College have been trimmed further by the recent resolution by government to hike fees three fold.
Starting 2021, it will be hard to join University education following a verdict reached at by the Ministry of Education in conjunction with the National Treasury.
News reaching Dundapost desk confirm that the recent National Assembly Committee meeting held on Wednesday and which saw senior Treasury and Education official attend, proposed the harsh changes and now the University education fees will jump from sh 16,000 to sh 48,000.
The move, according our sources, was firmly pushed by institutions Vice Chancellors who claimed they are underfunded making their work hard on the ground including settling payrolls. This claim would then be supported by Treasury PS Julius Muia and Higher Education PS Simon Nabukwesi.
The ministry representatives then promised to submit a Cabinet Paper in that effect that will see these changes take effect from start of 2021.
“But this must start from the Ministry of Education forwarding to us a well-thought-out and all-encompassing Cabinet Memorandum that we shall look through at the Treasury and forward to the Cabinet for discussion,” Muia noted.
The fees which parents pay today were set in 1989 in a plan that has seen the State pay sh 70,000 while students are left with sh 16,000 to pay.
